The Contemporary Face of Estonian Sculpture: Art Allmägi’s “Sundmõtted”

Fluidity, playing with form, seriality, and balancing on the border between the abstract and the figurative, combined with hyperrealism, are the keywords characterizing the latest art collection by Estonian sculptor and installation artist Art Allmägi (b. 1983). Allmägi is one of the most prominent artists of the younger Estonian generation, whose work is typically provocative, conceptual, and often socially critical.

In this body of work, Art dares to seek something softer—something uncharacteristic that forces him to step outside his usual boundaries.

Increasingly, he found himself sketching soft, flowing forms that initially emerged as byproducts but soon became persistent thought patterns. These formal experiments, originally deemed insignificant by the artist, had clearly taken root in his subconscious. At a certain point, these thought patterns turned into obsessions.
