Andro Kööp

Overview

Andro Kööp (born 1967) is a multidisciplinary Estonian artist whose work spans painting, fine-art photography, interior/scene design and curatorial practice.

Originally emerging in the 1990s as a leading figure of the creative-group NEOEKSPRE*POST, Kööp became known for his audacious combination of trash-aesthetics, camp-sensibility and provocative visual style in Estonia’s emerging contemporary art scene.

Over time his practice has evolved: while still embracing a bold palette and conceptual edge, he now often engages with interior, textile and carpet design (e.g., for Tekero rugs) as well as large-scale painting, reflecting both his design-background and fine-art ambitions.

Kööp’s recent solo-exhibitions include “Happiness Walks Here Every Day” (2023) and “RÕÕM” (“Joy”, 2024) — exposing his interest in themes of exuberance, colour-intensity and the everyday-surreal.

His visual language is marked by vibrant colour-fields, gestural layering, and the collision of high-design polish with an undercurrent of irreverence and cultural commentary. His paintings invite the viewer into an oscillation between decorative sophistication and conceptual challenge.

Based in Tallinn, Estonia, Andro Kööp continues to exhibit regularly, design bespoke pieces and collaborate across artistic disciplines.
